2015 Roanoke Heart Walk Raises $200,000

More than 2,000 dedicated supporters took part in this year's Heart Walk.

Local Lifestyle Change Award Winner Announced

The American Heart Association’s 2015 Roanoke Heart Walk on October 17, raised more than $200,000 for heart disease and stroke research and prevention education programs. Donations will continue to be accepted through December 31 at www.roanokenrvheartwalk.org.

“It was great to see such a huge crowd walking to support such an important cause,” said Paul Bonelli, Senior Vice President and Regional Brokerage Manager Market Leader for Virginia West for Wells Fargo Advisors and co-chair of the 2015 Roanoke Heart Walk.

“Heart disease and stroke touches all of us and the dollars that are raised for research and new medical advancements benefits all of us,” added Eric Stelter, Regional Bank Area President for Wells Fargo Southwest VA and walk co-chair.

The 2015 Lifestyle Change Award was also announced from the stage. The adult Lifestyle Change Award recognizes adults who have made positive changes to improve their quality of life and health.

Fred St. Clair, local heart disease survivor, was recognized as a Lifestyle Change Winner for losing over 50 pounds this year by walking daily. Betsy Parkins also received a Lifestyle Change Award. Betsy is a local heart disease survivor who started running this year. She has now participated in various 5K events around the community and is training for a ½ marathon.

All funds raised benefit heart disease and stroke research and prevention education. Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of both men and women in the United States and stroke is the leading cause of permanent disability.  Diseases of the Heart are also the No. 1 killer in Roanoke and Roanoke County.
