Wild Bill’s Sports Roundup!

Bill TurnerIt’s been quite the adventure the past three weeks in high school football.

Games postponed by rain, games delayed by lightning, games starting one day and finishing the next and the worst of all, game dates being adjusted in order to ridiculously accommodate Friday night college football.

Things were looking to return to normal this week as clear skies and sunny days dominated, and Virginia Tech headed to the Sunshine State to hopefully stay out of the way of our high school contests.

Hopefully, we have the last scheduling hurdle this week in the ‘Big-11’ as North Cross faces the challenge of traveling across state on Friday to play Hampton Roads Academy, before returning back home to play Blue Ridge at Salem Stadium on Tuesday night.

One thing that hasn’t changed through these adversities is the performance of the Ouija. Last week The Board went 8-1 in ‘Big-11’ games, running its record for the season to 50-7 (.877).

The only miss last week came in the last game of the weekend on Saturday night when Glenvar kicked a field goal late in the fourth quarter to beat Giles by two points. Close, but no cigar.

We’ve got The Board’s velvet-lined case ready for travel to Las Vegas once The Chief gives the thumbs-up.

Until that word comes down from the presidential penthouse, let’s get right to the Week-8 games where Patrick Henry, Lord Botetourt, Hidden Valley and Roanoke Catholic all have a bye week, while North Cross makes us come up with two predictions.

CARROLL COUNTY AT CAVE SPRING: Carroll County travels to Bogle Stadium for the second time in as many weeks. Can the Cavs change their fortunes from the first time? Cave Spring- 31 Carroll County- 21

CHRISTIANSBURG AT SALEM: Salem is undefeated and it’s homecoming weekend for the Spartans. A queen, a king, a princess and a prince. Oh, my goodness. Too much royalty to go around. Salem- 52 Christiansburg- 7

WILLIAM BYRD AT NORTHSIDE: Many people think Byrd will need The Ghostbusters to knock off Northside. So, who would you call ? How about Larry Basham. Upset special. William Byrd- 29 Northside- 27

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY AT WILLIAM FLEMING: The Colonels look to get back to winning ways on the artificial turf at Fleming. Close, but let’s say the Colonels prevail. William Fleming- 27 Rockbridge County- 19

GLENVAR AT AUBURN: The undefeated Highlanders travel up I-81 and down Route 8 to Riner. Could be the biggest trap game of the year for the Highlanders. Glenvar- 26 Auburn- 24

NORTH CROSS AT HAMPTON ROADS ACADEMY: (FRI) Tough road trip for the Raiders after the final-minute loss to STAB last Friday in Charlottesville. Salt-water special for North Cross. North Cross- 35 Hampton Roads- 20

NORTH CROSS VS BLUE RIDGE: (TUES 5:30pm AT SALEM STADIUM) Two games in four nights for the Raiders. The Salem trip is shorter, but not necessarily easier. North Cross- 25 Blue Ridge- 18

Last call for the Roanoke Valley Sports Club meeting Monday, October 19th at the Salem Civic. ESPN radio personality Bob Valvano will be the guest speaker where things kick off with a 5:45 social, followed by the dinner meeting. Contact Maggie Drewry at 540-353-1103 to make reservations and purchase tickets. Guests and prospective club members are always welcome.

Off to the October 17th ‘Big-11’ volleyball poll:

#1) Hidden Valley

#2) Cave Spring

#3) tie-Northside and Glenvar

Finally, to the mail bag, where upcoming big games get attention this week.

Dear Wild Bill: What’s do think is the most exciting game on the horizon for this fall? (Steve/Roanoke)

Steve, I’d go with the Cubs-Mets upcoming baseball series. If the Mets still played in the Polo Grounds, we’d be ready to, as the song says, Marvin Gaye and get it on. Nonetheless, this series will make baseball fun. Maybe seven times.

Until next week, get your Marvin Gaye on, and get those questions to [email protected]
