The Roanoke Valley Garden Club will host best-selling author, James Farmer, on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at the Taubman Museum of Art, 110 Salem Avenue, Roanoke.

Farmer is the 2015 host speaker for the garden club’s bi-annual speaker series.  Proceeds will benefit community projects in the Roanoke Valley.  He will be speaking and demonstrating flower arrangements from his newest book, A Time to Celebrate.

Hailing from the pecan and peach laden fields of Georgia, James Farmer learned the joys of seasonal cooking and eating at the side of his grandmother whose Southern heirloom recipes he revitalizes for contemporary tastes.

A professional garden, floral, and interior designer, cook, author and lifestyle expert, Farmer is a young, fresh voice for his generation.  Whether it’s planning a menu for a summer picnic, using everyday items for an extra special tabletop display, or making a skillet peach pie, Farmer masterfully guides his audience through the art of elegant garden living with true Southern flair.

Farmer is an editor-at-large for Southern Living Magazine.  He has been featured on NBC TODAY, HGTV Gardens, Paula’s Home Cooking, Harper’s Bazaar, Good Housekeeping Magazine, Women’s Day, Traditional Home, The Local Palate and has published several books.  Cooking, recipes, entertaining and Southern stories will all meld together in his newest publication, A Time to Celebrate.  The theme of this book is to “let us continue the feast.”

Garden Club member Nancy Peak said, “As Southerners, we ‘continue our feasts’ throughout the year which gives us reason to celebrate.  We are known for our hospitality, which is an extension of our graciousness and hallmark of our culture.  Retirement, showers, birthdays, marriage celebrations and the seasons all give us reasons to celebrate.  So we are inviting everyone to join us for A Time to Celebrate.”
