Thor’s Second Chance

Several weeks ago, Sabrina and I witnessed a twisted irony. [I guess there’s no other kind.] But before I tell you what happened, a brief word of preface:

There was a young lady who owned two sibling Dobermans. She fell in love with a man, and they decided he and his six year old daughter should move into her home. One of the Dobermans bit the child and was sent to the city pound. He had ten days to live – Death Row. The reason for the ten days was a rabies watch. If the dog became sick during that time, he would be euthanized, and his brain examined for rabies. If he remained well, he would still be euthanized because the Pound has finite resources and space, not to mention: who’s going to adopt a Doberman that bites?

My Sabrina and I would.

You see, we learned from a friend of mine – someone who knew this couple – that there was more to the story: the young daughter relentlessly tormented the dog that bit her, and he was trying to get away from her. But she kept pursuing him. Thus, the bite, the Pound, and Sabrina and me.

We took him home after a very successful meeting at the Pound. We named him ‘Thor.’ A better-natured, gentler dog, wholly committed to his owners, you would never find.

Okay, now the irony: We got a call two weeks ago; a young woman with an injured bird. She and her husband bought it to us, and in the course of conversation, seeing our Dobies in our fenced in back yard, she told us she loved that breed.

She told us she’d had to get rid of one of her Dobies, as he had bitten a child. Sabrina knew in an instant who she was. Sabrina let the dogs loose into the area where the couple stood, a wooden fence between them.

The woman stared at Thor, although there were four other dogs grouped there. She made no comment.

As their car began to leave, it suddenly stopped, she got out of the door and approached the fence staring yet again at Thor. She suspected – but Sabrina and I knew – she recognized the dog she had sent to Death Row.
