The Eleanor D. Wilson Museum is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Philadelphia artist Scott Noel, “Scott Noel – Mythologies, Paintings from 1995-2015” that will be open to the public Thursday, August 6, 2015 through Saturday, November 14, 2015.

Scott Noel is a prolific painter of cityscapes, still lifes, portraits, figures, and elaborate mythological constructions. This exhibit at the Eleanor D. Wilson Museum at Hollins University presents Noel’s large-scale classically inspired works.

Noel paints exclusively from direct observation. In his contemporary re-tellings of Greek and Roman history and myth, he locates his Arcadia in his studio in Manayunk, a suburb of Philadelphia. His models are local artists, students, family members, and friends who play out relationships codified in thousands of years of verse and pictorial history.

After completing his B.F.A. at Washington University in Saint Louis in 1978, Scott Noel began teaching and exhibiting his work in Philadelphia. His work has since been displayed in numerous solo and group exhibitions at galleries, universities, and museums. Solo exhibitions have appeared at the State Museum in Harrisburg, the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, The Painting Center in New York, and the Gross McCleaf Gallery in Philadelphia.

Noel is an associate professor at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, teaching figure drawing and painting in the Certificate, B.F.A., and M.F.A. programs.

Noel will give a lecture in conjunction with his exhibition on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at 6:00 pm in the Frances J. Niederer Auditorium of the Richard Wetherill Visual Arts Center. A reception will follow in the first floor lobby of the Richard Wetherill Visual Arts Center.

Works featured in this exhibition are courtesy of Scott Noel and the Gross McCleaf Gallery. Scott Noel – Mythologies, Paintings from 1995-2015 is organized by Elise Schweitzer, Assistant Professor of Painting at Hollins University, and the Eleanor D. Wilson Museum.

The museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 10am-4pm, on Saturday from 1pm-5pm, and is closed during university breaks. For more information, please call (540) 362-6532 or visit us online at www.hollins.edu/museum or on our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/EleanorDWilsonMuseum.
