Blue Moon Over Roanoke

DSC_00201 (800x531)The full moon on July 31st followed just four weeks after the first full moon of the month, on July 1st. It, therefore, met the “two full moons in a month” definition of a Blue Moon. The “Blue Moon” moniker is just a nickname, with most usually shining its normal bright white form. Skywatchers will get their next opportunity to get a glimpse of a Blue Moon in 2018, weather and clear skies permitting. In a rare twin showing, the first Blue Moon will appear on January 31, 2018 with a repeat performance two months later on March 31st.
