North Cross School has announced that Shannon Taylor has been named head coach of the Girls’ Varsity Basketball team.

Taylor is not a new face in the North Cross athletic department. Last season he coached the Boys JV White basketball team and has been the defensive coordinator of the Raiders football team for the last six seasons.

“Shannon Taylor has a tremendous ability to reach young people of all ages, and we are fortunate to have him in a position to help build our girls basketball program,” said North Cross School’s Director of Athletics and Wellness, Eric Lawrence.

Taylor began his basketball coaching career in 2003 by coaching the Roanoke Lady Hawks, an AAU basketball team, for eight seasons. Nine members of his Lady Hawks went on to play collegiately at Division I and II schools. In their last season, the team had a record of 115-8 and won the state championship. The team finished ninth in the country in Division I for two consecutive years. His daughter, Ataijah Taylor, played under his tutelage and is now a junior point guard for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.

For the last three seasons, Shannon has been coaching the Boy’s U11 VA All Star Hawks. They finished 2014 with a 61-7 record, earning the AAU State Championship, the AAU National Classic Championship, and NTBA National Runner-up.

Taylor was a standout athlete at Patrick Henry High School. He graduated in 1994 and was inducted into the Patrick Henry Sports Hall of Fame in 2013. Taylor continued his football career at the University of Virginia where he earned a B.A. in Anthropology and a minor in Psychology. He was drafted in 2000 by the San Diego Chargers and went on to play two seasons with the Baltimore Ravens and concluded his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2003.

Taylor is also a physical education instructor at North Cross School and is the owner of Elite Level Camps.
