Wild Bill’s Sports Roundup!

Bill TurnerWell, the buzz is still prominent about my proposed sculpture of ‘Manneken Chief’ for our corporate fountain.

Evidently, the average person thinks this beauty can be created in a couple weeks. No way. We’re talking years.

Auguste Rodin said “Sculpture is the art of the hole and the lump.” Although I have no idea what that means, I’ll take Rodin’s word for it. After all, he did create ‘The Thinker.’

And, William Cullen Bryant once commented, “A sculptor wields the chisel, and the stricken marble grows to beauty.” That sounds more like me and ‘Manneken Chief.’

One angle I have in mind is to have a hot water line piped into the fountain. In winter, the mist will make this thing look very mysterious. Just like The Chief, himself.

On to the local sports scene where the Roanoke Valley Sports Club presents back-to-back meetings at Roanoke Country Club July 22nd and 27th. It’s college football preseason that brings UVA night on the 22nd with associate head coach/linebackers Mike Archer, and Virginia Tech associate head coach/running backs Shane Beamer on the 27th to talk Hokie football. 5:45 socials kick off both events, with the 6:15 dinner meetings to follow. Contact Maggie Drewry at 540-353-1103 for questions and to purchase tickets.

The Salem Fair starts its run this week, so the only opportunity to see the Salem Red Sox at home during the first 16 days of July will be during a three-game set July 7-9 against Carolina. Salem looks to rebound from a second-place finish in the Carolina League Southern Division first-half with a strong run in the 70-game second half of the season.

Your Star sports team will be in White Sulphur Springs this week for coverage of the 6th annual Greenbrier Classic PGA TOUR event. Yours truly expects to hook up with pro John Daly, where Loudmouth fashion will definitely be the order of the day. (See today’s edition for further information on the tournament).

Congratulations go out to the Cave Spring girls tennis team for capturing the Group 3A state championship at Liberty University. Likewise, sisters Fallon and Reagan Delp for bringing home the 3A doubles title. (See today’s edition for coverage of the championship).

Now, to this editions late-night product review where we take a look at everyone’s favorite product, the pressure cooker. In this case, The Power Pressure Cooker.

We get off to a bad start in this one when the announcer proclaims, “Look at this! I can’t get all this food on the platter. (Wild Bill hint: get a bigger platter)

Then, we quickly learn this bucket has a 6-quart capacity. We’re told the PPC can feed a small army and then are forced to watch a gang of people stuffing themselves over what is a half-hour pitch.

We see 5 lobsters cooked in 5 minutes, a low country boil and 6 quarts of chili being infused with flavor until the PPC cuts itself off automatically. Believe me, if you eat all that chili, others will be begging you to cut something out.

Next, we hear the declaration, “I can’t talk about a pressure cooker without talking about my grandmother’s meatballs.” This thing cooks 100 at once, although I couldn’t reach Grandma for additional comment.

All being said, I give the Power Pressure Cooker a Wild Bill positive 5-Star review. Versatility, quantity and presentation are impressive, not to mention the free cookbook, canning guide and power chopper.

Until next time, get me some Pepto Bismol. I’m too stuffed to even think about sculpting The Chief.
