I Really Am The Lucky One

Long ago, I heard the expression ‘Ghost Lives.’ Apparently we all have them. The concept refers to the apparently endless variation each of our lives might have taken had we made choices other than the ones we did.

A minor example: I tried out for the football team in college. Didn’t make it. What if I had? A whole world of possibilities are invigorated from there: Stardom? Pro-ball, or not? Injuries? Marrying the campus beauty queen? But I didn’t qualify, so a whole new set of panoramas and projections – ghost lives – opened up to me.

I was single when I met and married Sabrina. [Being single as you approach the altar helps one avoid certain legal entanglements.]

But she asked for my hand so sweetly, how could I say ‘no?’ :}

It wasn’t but a year or two after our wedding, I began to appreciate how special my wife was and my life would now become.

There are times I truly believe Sabrina is not of this Earth. Regarding her commitment to wildlife rehabilitation, I marvel at the fact that, on any given day, she may intake sixty-seven incoming phone calls from people who have found injured critters; and that’s just incoming calls!

She will arise at four o’clock, work the day, then awake at two AM to feed those too little to go the night without food. [Yes, I do help with ‘late’ feeds, but there’s no denying, she does the heavy lifting.]

Diagnostically, she sees things even vets miss, and, of course, getting a head-start on a medical issue is the best way to turn it about.

Her influence on ‘her kids,’ the volunteers of like rehab- mind who come here to learn, is phenomenal, and expanding. Several generations of students, eager to be taught have flocked to her over the years. For them, she is the ‘Older Sister,’ The Mentor.

I watch her in wonder and conclude, being an angel is hard, often exhausting work; but it is with diligence that she perseveres, often fatigued in the extreme, sometimes wishing for a brief holiday from her efforts. Nevertheless, she pushes onward. A special, Heaven-sent woman, that one!

I do so admire my wife… and I have no idea where I’d be if SHE had said “no!”
