Roanoke and SML Discovery Shops Forecast to Hit $8 Million This Week

The American Cancer Society Discovery Shop at Smith Mountain Lake expects to hit the $2 million mark at its annex sale this coming Thursday, May 14, 2015. This milestone will put the two shops (Roanoke and Moneta) at $8 million for cancer research and programs.

This momentous event will occur sometime during the semi-annual Annex Sale, a special sale of new High Point Furniture Market donations that takes place at the Moneta shop’s temporary annex at 12925 Booker T. Washington Highway, Hardy, VA, suite 104. The sale runs for two consecutive weekends Thursday through Saturday May 14-16 and May 21-23.

The only Discovery Shops in the South Atlantic Region of the American Cancer Society the first opened in Roanoke on Franklin Road in 1995 and in Moneta in 2004 on Scruggs Road. Over two hundred volunteers are involved with the management and operation of the shops.

The funds support the American Cancer Society’s mission to save lives from cancer through research to find cures, efforts to help people stay well and programs and services to help people facing cancer.

The shops specializes in selling upscale donated items to the public, with a focus on furniture and household goods in Moneta and upscale men’s and women’s apparel in the Roanoke shop. Among donations from private individuals and estates and numerous commercial supporters, hundreds of vendors at the High Point International Furniture Market contribute large amounts of home décor items twice a year.
