Winds Blow Strong for 17th Annual Blue Ridge Kite Festival

Kite Fest 2Families, community groups, and kids of all ages gathered at Green Hill Park in Roanoke County to attend the 17th Annual Blue Ridge Kite Festival on April 18th. The Festival was another huge success with the largest attendance in the history of the Kite Festival.

Attendees enjoyed the Richmond Air Force Kite Club with their beautiful kites of vibrant colors soaring above the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Engvalls, who build and fly exhibition kites that require 6 – 10 anchor people per kite, also returned and launched their magnificent kites into the sky.

Over 50 vendors attended, bringing delicious food, arts and crafts, and fun for the kids. Sponsors set up display areas and distributed free gifts, and kids activities. Children also enjoyed free event t-shirts, ice cream provided by Freedom First Credit Union, and Kroger kite kits. Families set out lawn chairs, relaxed on blankets, had picnics and marveled at the sky filled with kites of all shapes and sizes.

An estimated 50 community volunteers worked with the Salem-Roanoke County Chamber of Commerce on this special day in Green Hill Park.
