Wild Bill’s Sports Roundup!

Bill TurnerWe shall begin this week’s column with a session dominated in deep thought.

“A clever man commits no minor blunders.”

German philosopher Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, born in 1748, gave us this classic quote. Yes, you always learn something when you read this column.

Ole Johnny von G. must have been thinking about me when he reeled that one off. In my last column on April 3rd, I certainly made no minor blunder; I made a whopper.

Listed in the Conference 32 boys basketball All-Stars was second-team selection Graham Whitaker. A talented player who was a starter for Hall of Fame coach Troy Wells at Hidden Valley, I’ve seen Graham play numerous times this season and know he wore #22. Graham is a member of the National Beta Club, National Science Honor Society and National History Honor Society. Maybe he should swing by my office and see if any of those smarts can rub off on me. I listed him as playing for Salem.

The Chief first got word of this boo-boo and I don’t think he was calling me a philosopher. Just like Perry White acts at The Daily Planet.

Apologies to Graham and his parents, Lisa and Jimmy.

Now, to local sports where the Salem Red Sox had a successful season home opener Thursday night with a convincing 13-3 win over Carolina. The home stand continues with Carolina through Sunday before Myrtle Beach comes to town for a three-game set Monday-Wednesday.

We stay in Salem where the Roanoke Valley Sports Club welcomes longtime Salem Civic Center director Carey Harveycutter as guest speaker for its meeting Monday, April 20th.at the Salem Civic Center. The 5:45 social is followed by the 6:15 dinner meeting. Guests and prospective members are welcome. For information and to purchase tickets, contact Maggie Drewry at 540-353-1103.

The Wild Bill road show heads to Bristol Motor Speedway on Sunday for NASCAR’s Food City 500. Loudmouth pants will rule in the pits at The Last Great Colosseum. No decision yet on the Loudmouth style for Sunday’s 1:00 p.m. green flag televised on FOX.

High school baseball and softball have slowed due the recent spring break and celebrated April showers. The first “Big-11” Top-3 in both will be forthcoming once the teams return to dry fields.

Finally, to the mail bag where one reader wants advice on making travel plans and another questions my credentials as a restaurant critic.

Dear Wild Bill: I’ve got joint pain, so I’d like to travel to the source of your recent late-night product review which relieves the same. Would you suggest I travel to Iceland or the waters of New Zealand? (Gladys/Roanoke)

I’d head to Iceland, Gladys. It’s closer, the nightlife is better and you won’t be hassled by kiwis.

Dear Restaurant Critic: OK, so you can speak French. But, do you have the smarts to evaluate upscale food dishes? (Vivian/Salem)

Sure, Vivian. Just ask Graham Whitaker.

Until next time, identify your team and send the questions to [email protected]
