Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest VA (BBBS) has announced that Big Sister Jessica Nelson was awarded the title of “Virginia Big Sister of the Year” by the Big Brothers Big Sisters Virginia Alliance.

Big Sister Jessica and Little Sister Kianna have been matched for nearly 11 years, and Kianna will graduate from high school and the BBBS program this spring.

The two thought about it a little while and the decided what better way to celebrate this accomplishment and their time together than to rappel 11 stories from the roof of the Patrick Henry as part of BBBS’ signature event, “Over The Edge” on May 1.

When you look at Jessica and Kianna its not hard to see the magnetism that connects the two. “We basically grew up together. I’ve known Kianna longer than I’ve known my husband!” Big Sister Jessica explains.

“If I had never met Jessica, my life would have been very dull. I wouldn’t have had a childhood,” Kianna told us. “Big Brothers Big Sisters gives kids the chance to have a friend and a role model; it helps them stay out of trouble.”

Everyone at BBBS is proud of both Jessica and Kianna, and they are excited to see what Kianna’s future holds.
