In a ceremony Monday night, Carilion Clinic renamed its patient transport center after George B. Cartledge, Jr., in honor of his nearly 40 years of service as a member of the Carilion Clinic Board of Directors. The Carilion building located at 431 McClanahan Avenue in Roanoke will now be known as The George B. Cartledge Jr. Center for Transportation.

“George has been vital to Carilion’s efforts to expand patient care services throughout our region,” said James Hartley, chairman of Carilion Clinic’s board of directors. “One important way he has done that is through his strong support of Carilion’s helicopter transport services.”

The George B. Cartledge Center for Transportation houses the administrative offices for Carilion Clinic Patient Transportation, and it is the home base in Roanoke for Carilion ambulances and helicopters.

Cartledge has served on the Carilion Clinic Board of Directors for 39 years. He chaired the Carilion Clinic Board of Directors for a decade. As a result of his dedicated and active leadership, Roanoke Hospital Association transitioned to Carilion Health System, a regional hospital system; Roanoke Memorial Hospitals and Community Hospital of the Roanoke Valley merged to create Carilion Medical Center; and then Carilion Health System evolved into Carilion Clinic.

With his support, Carilion also embarked on a successful joint venture with Virginia Tech to create a new type of medical training facility – the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute.
