Volunteers will be recognized from 18 different departments within the Rescue Mission.

Capes will soar and cheers will roar on Sunday, February 8 when the Rescue Mission holds its annual Volunteer Appreciation event. The theme for this year’s event is Superheroes.

Beginning at 2PM, the Rescue Mission will honor the volunteers that dedicate so much of their time helping hurting people. This year, 18 different departments in the Mission will recognize superhero volunteers that have gone above and beyond the call of duty.

“We truly wouldn’t be able to keep doing the work we do without all of our dedicated volunteers. They do the work of approximately 50 employees,” says Leslie Littlefield, Volunteer Coordinator.

In 2014, volunteers gave over 112,600 hours of dedicated service to the Rescue Mission.

“I love volunteering at the Rescue Mission,” says Erika Buck, 2013 Network volunteer of the year, and an employee of the Red Cross. “Because I also work for a non-profit, I understand the importance of volunteers. It’s just as rewarding for me knowing that I am making a difference in people’s lives.”

“It gives me a chance to keep practicing medicine even after retirement,” says Dr. Bill Erwin, a volunteer in the Rescue Mission Fralin Free Clinic. “I love getting to meet new people every time I’m here,” says Susan Jordan, a Roanoke City school teacher and regular volunteer in reception. “I love the thrills and spreading the word of the Rescue Mission,” says Kevin Spencer, mascot and “spokesturkey” of the Rescue Mission’s annual Drumstick Dash race.
