Wild Bill’s Sports Roundup!

Wild Bill Turner gets even wilder.
Wild Bill Turner gets even wilder.

Sometimes, you get what you wish for . . . and sometimes – not so much.

A couple months ago The Chief asked for a new column picture, but I suspect he now wishes he’d kept quiet. I pulled out all the stops on this one. Wild animals and a bird; Carnac the Magnificent hat; Loudmouth pants; my Ouija paraphernalia and mystic chair. All in front of a roaring fire, nonetheless.

This picture summarizes the column in a capsule while honoring my psychic advisors, Carroll Righter and Jeane Dixon. Last week that duo came through again as my predictions only had a single miss.

Carroll Righter rented a lion for his Leo Party honoring the Hollywood crowd, so I brought in a Canadian brown bear and ringneck pheasant to honor The Chief. As most of you readers know, there’s similarities galore between the Hollywood gang and The Chief. (Publisher’s note: “Sheesh.”)

While the iron is hot, it might be time for The Chief to consider one of those zodiac, astrology columns in The Star where I answer reader questions on the future. Sorta like a palm reader in print.

Now, if I can get these wild animals out of here, we’ll try to put our finger on this week’s high school football predictions. Cave Spring has the off week.

NORTHSIDE at WILLIAM BYRD: Northside comes off its big win over Botetourt and Byrd is on a two game win streak. The Vikings look to have the upper hand. Northside- 35 William Byrd- 20

WILLIAM FLEMING at LORD BOTETOURT: The 6-1 Colonels travel to Daleville where the 4-3 Cavaliers await after their loss to Northside. Botetourt can be a tough cookie when pushed into a corner. Upset special. Lord Botetourt- 26 William Fleming- 23

CARROLL COUNTY at SALEM: Carroll County fans made two trips down Rt. 221 this month. Will a different route down I-81 to Salem change their luck this week against the 7-0 Spartans? Salem- 56 Carroll County- 7

AUBURN at GLENVAR: Another team taking I-81 to Salem. Unfortunately for the Eagles, there’s another undefeated team waiting in Highlander Heaven. Glenvar- 41 Auburn- 14

COVENANT at NORTH CROSS (SAT): North Cross looks to make a statement in their final two games at home. Covenant looks to snap a two-game losing streak. Raiders prevail. North Cross- 35 Covenant- 26

ROANOKE CATHOLIC at BLESSED SACRAMENT-HUGUENOT:  The 6-2 Celtics look to improve their postseason position with a win in Richmond against 4-3 BSH. Upset special #2 Blessed Sacrament- 33 Roanoke Catholic- 29

PATRICK HENRY at CHRISTIANSBURG: The Patriots continue their 5-game road show after a week off. The Blue Demons are always tough on home turf. But, tough enough? Patrick Henry- 28 Christiansburg- 20

PULASKI COUNTY at HIDDEN VALLEY: Another trap game for the Titans after an off week and Salem and Cave Spring on the horizon. This one may be real close in the Cougars second trip to Bogle Field in as many weeks.  Hidden Valley- 24 Pulaski County- 23

That wraps it up for this week, so…..uh-oh…..The invoice is here. I had no idea what it cost to rent a Canadian brown bear. I’ll need a crystal wrecking ball to slip this one past The Chief on my expense report.

In the meantime, until I return from parts unknown, send your questions to [email protected]
