Wild Bill’s Sports Roundup!

Good things come to those who wait.

Accordingly, good things will be heading The Chief’s way, cause he’s going to have to wait.

As you regular readers know, The Chief put on the full court press last week for me to provide a new column picture. He even stooped so low as to bring my old “Rodin The Thinke ” snapshot out of The Star archives. Handsome subject, but old pic.

Since my new picture will be the recognizable signature of the column, I felt it should reflect the current state of affairs in The Wild Bill sphere of influence.

Thus, I have used my incomparable psychic connections with Carroll Righter to come up with what Cecil B. DeMille once termed an epic spectacular.

Carroll was famous for renting a live lion for his Hollywood Leo Party. I refuse to be outdone and Carroll may agree that you ain’t seen nothing, yet.

Sorry, no hints or photographic previews. This one will be released in the October 24th edition.

Now, it’s time to settle in for this week’s high school football predictions. William Byrd, after its first win last Friday night, is idle.

PATRICK HENRY at HARRISONBURG: The Patriots play their third road game in a stretch of 5 straight. The trip to 1-4 Harrisonburg may offer a time to exhale. Harrisonburg has been shut out twice and has given up 55 or more points two times. That’s enough info to get this week’s slate underway. Patrick Henry- 30 Harrisonburg- 12

NORTH CROSS at ISLE OF WIGHT: This is a rare Friday night game for the Raiders. The long road game to the eastern shore may prove challenging against a 4-1 IOW team. North Cross should make it interesting with VISAA playoff bids taking shape. Isle of Wight- 28 North Cross- 25

GLENVAR at EASTERN MONTGOMERY: The battle of Route 460 West heads to Shawsville. The 5-0 Highlanders had the week off last Friday to prepare. That’s bad news for any opponent. Can the green and gold go 6-0? You bet. Glenvar- 38 Eastern Montgomery- 20

QUANTICO at ROANOKE CATHOLIC: The Warriors visit Vineyard Field on a 4-game losing streak where the Celtics reversed a two-game losing streak last Friday with a win over Craig County. Catholic makes it two in a row. Roanoke Catholic- 29 Quantico- 6

CARROLL COUNTY at CAVE SPRING: The Cavaliers from Hillsville make their way 63 miles down Route 221 for the second time in two weeks. Last week it was a 42-0 loss to Hidden Valley. Things might not look any better this time on homecoming night for Cave Spring. Cave Spring- 40 Carroll County- 7

NORTHSIDE at ALLEGHANY: The Vikings flexed their muscle last Friday against previously unbeaten Fleming. This week they flex their muscle against the 3-3 Mountaineers. Northside- 39 Alleghany- 13

STAUNTON RIVER at WILLIAM FLEMING: The Colonels look to regroup after the setback at Northside last Friday. At 0-6, Staunton River may be the perfect visitor. William Fleming- 35 Staunton River- 14

CHRISTIANSBURG at SALEM: The undefeated Spartans play host at Salem Stadium where the Blue Demons look for a huge upset. No way the Blue Demons get an early Halloween treat. Salem- 41 Christiansburg- 13

HIDDEN VALLEY at BLACKSBURG: A trap game for sure for the 5-1 Titans. Dave Crist’s Bruins will pull out every trick in the book in this one. Will it be enough? Doubtful. Hidden Valley- 27 Blacksburg- 24

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY at LORD BOTETOURT: The Cavaliers remain on the playoff bubble despite their blowout win at Alleghany. This may be the wrong time for 0-5 Rockbridge County to visit Daleville. Lord Botetourt- 45 Rockbridge County- 16

On to local events, where the Roanoke Valley Sports Club presents Virginia Tech athletic director Whit Babcock as its guest speaker for the Monday, October 20th meeting at the Salem Civic Center. A 5:45 social is followed by a 6:15 dinner meeting where fans can get the latest news on VT athletics. Guests and prospective club members are cordially invited to attend. Contact Maggie Drewry at 540-353-1103 for further information and to make reservations.

Finally, a look in the mail bag gets interesting this week after a reader does some research on Carroll Righter’s Leo Party and finds connections to this column.

Dear Wild Bill: After reading your column, my husband and I googled “Carroll Righter’s Leo Party” and amazingly ran into the connection between the astrologer and yourself. Have you actually talked to Carroll Righter ? (Hazel and Virgil/ Rocky Mount)

Not face-to-face, Hazel. Carroll passed away on April 30th……1988.

Until next week, don’t be frightened off.  Just send your inquiries to [email protected]
