Kristin Hearp, seen here during her Roanoke Valley Hall of Fame win, captured the VSGA Women’s Junior Championship Wednesday with a 6-under, 140 total.

Following a first round 5-under-par 68 in which she birdied six of the final seven holes, Hearp shot a workmanlike 1-under 72 in the second round to win the Virginia State Golf Association Women’s Junior Championship.

Her 6-under, 140 total, bested Floyd’s Amanda Hollandsworth, Williamsburg’s Emily Salamy and Richmond’s Alex Wright by three shots,

Hearp’s win short circuited Hollandsworth’s attempt to join her sister, Jessica, along with Salem’s Lee Shirley and Floyd’s Susan Slaughter as three-time winners.

Hearp, 16, has established herself as the up-and-coming premier women’s golfer in the Roanoke Valley after winning the women’s Hall of Fame championship in June on top of a blazing 9-under 61 in the Bob McLelland Metro Tournament last August at Ole Monterey Golf Club.

Hearp has verbally committed to play for the new women’s golf program at Virginia Tech in 2016 under new Tech women’s golf coach Carol Robertson. She will join Amanda Hollandsworth on the Hokie team.

After Wednesday’s round, Hearp was giving credit to looper Drew Lagan, a close friend and former Cave Spring golf standout who is heading to Missouri Western this fall on a golf scholarship.

Other Roanoke-area players at the top of the leader board included Cave Spring graduate and Radford-bound Meagan Board, who finished tied for sixth with a 2-round total of 149.

Katie Turk, a rising senior at Blacksburg High School and quarterfinalist last week in the VSGA Women’s Amateur, tied for 11th with a 155 total. Two other Roanokers, Amy Yang (179) and Jayde Dudley (184) made impressive showings in Crozet.
