That school inside Tanglewood Mall, Miller-Motte Technical College, was abuzz last week as students met with prospective employers at a job fair. About 20 companies had set up tables and were available to speak with students pursuing certificate or 2-year degree programs at the for-profit school, where an associate’s degree may coast upwards of $30,000, according to a spokesperson. Financial aid is available.

Ronald Marsh was on hand for Virginia Tech and the Virginia Tech-Carilion campus in Roanoke, in his role as recruiter. “We have over 200 jobs available right now that are posted,” said Marsh. The list is also available online at the vt.edu website. Marsh said they ran the gamut from managerial to clerical and health care… even housekeeping and food service.

Marsh said his review of Miller-Motte programs showed it to be “a perfect fit for what we offer.” One student stopped by with their certificate for technical billing and coding. “We may have a job that’s open in that field. It’s a perfect fit.”

Matthew Klein, the director of career technical services for Miller-Motte’s Roanoke campus (he had been stationed in Lynchburg) said the school is nationally accredited for degree programs. Klein said career tracks like Medical Assistant and Certified Nursing Assistant are “absolutely” in tune with market demand these days. “Tons of hiring.” The massage therapy and cosmetology certificate programs typically lead to employment, he added.

Klein said Miller-Motte aims for a 70 percent or higher rate when it comes to immediate employment for its graduates. “[That’s] strong.” Courses are run on a quarterly basis for the most part, diploma programs (non-degreed) like massage therapy and cosmetology feature 9-12 month curriculums. “There’s plenty of opportunities [for students],” said Klein.
