Area Native, Arts Management Professional, Crane Appointed New Executive Leader of RSO

Raonoke SymphonyThe Roanoke Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors has appointed management professional, and Roanoke area native, David Crane as their new Executive Director. Currently serving as General Manager of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Crane will take his position at the helm of the RSO’s administrative staff beginning June 30, 2014.

Crane comes to the RSO with over 16 years of arts management experience, including positions with Virginia Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and at Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. Crane earned the Bachelor of Music degree from Virginia Commonwealth University, and grew up in Botetourt County. With regards to the Roanoke area and his new position, Crane stated, “The Roanoke Symphony Orchestra is a cornerstone of cultural life in Southwest Virginia. It is a huge honor for me to become its Executive Director.”

RSO Music Director & Conductor David Stewart Wiley commented, “The musicians and I are thrilled to welcome David Crane as our Executive Director. His demonstrated administrative leadership, knowledge of music, and years of experience with other professional orchestras will be a great asset as we take the RSO to the next level. We are excited to partner with him in our mission.”

RSO President-Elect Janet Johnson added, “After a national search that included review by a search committee and interviews with staff, musicians, the RSO Board and patrons, we are delighted David answered the call and that he brings both a broad administrative experience with orchestras as well as the background of a professional musician.”

The Roanoke Symphony Orchestra’s 2014-2015 season begins August 24 with the organization’s first Pops concert in Roanoke’s newly built Elmwood Park Amphitheater. Information about the 2014-2015 season, including new “create-your-own-style” ticket packages, will be announced May 26, 2014 at www.rso.com. Ticket packages go on sale July 1, 2014.
