The Suntrust Foundation provided a $9,500 grant to the Rescue Mission of Roanoke to contribute to the playground improvement project located behind the Mission’s Women and Children’s Center.

Based on crowding and safety issues for children and families on the sidewalks surrounding the Rescue Mission, the need for an upgrade to the playground area and equipment was inevitable. The Mission requested funds for additional heavy-duty metal benches, fencing for a larger play space, and a playground pad to rid the area of mulch. Suntrust’s grant will assist the Mission in adding all of these aspects to the children’s play area.

By partnering with local organizations, Suntrust strives to strengthen and assist the communities in which they serve. “The expansion of our playground is vital to the children who are living at the Rescue Mission because it allows them, even in the midst of family trauma, to play like kids are supposed to do. We’re grateful for Suntrust’s generous grant, as it will help us get the playground improved for the children staying with us,” states Joe Overfelt, Children’s Minister at the Rescue Mission.

Joy Sylvester-Johnson, CEO of the Rescue Mission said, “The Suntrust investment is the first step in creating the kind of play area we want our children to have, and we are so grateful they agree with us that every child deserves a safe and happy home.”
