Mayor Bowers of the City of Roanoke and Mayor Grose of the Town of Vinton volunteered with a local nonprofit organization during Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service last Tuesday. Both mayors chipped in to help “Rebuilding Together – Roanoke,” a healthy housing non-profit, organize its warehouse in preparation for National Rebuilding Day, a community-wide event that brings more than 650 volunteers together on April 26th to provide free critical home repairs to nearly 40 homeowners across the Roanoke Valley.

Both Mayor Bowers and Mayor Grose assisted by organizing tools, supplies, and volunteer safety equipment in the organization’s warehouse located at 530 8th St. SW in Roanoke.

“Rebuilding Together – Roanoke is a small organization but thanks to the involvement of over 1,100 volunteers as well as AmeriCorps service members, we are able to serve more than 100 low-income homeowners each year,” said Kendall Cloeter, Program Administrator for the group. “We could not be more thrilled to host the Mayor’s Day of Recognition and volunteer alongside Mayor Bowers and Mayor Grose.”

Mayors Day of Recognition for National Service began in 2013 as a day to spotlight the impact of national service and those who serve. This year, mayors across the country will hold public events and use traditional and social media to highlight the value and impact of national service to the nation’s cities.
