Wild Bill’s Weekly Sports Roundup!

High school playoff football is upon us, and the regular season has been kind to the Wild Bill “Big-11”.

Nine of the eleven teams are in the playoffs, with eight looking for first-round wins and one needing just one more win to capture a state championship. The new conference pairings, 1-16 seedings for all but 5A and 6A Groups and the way subsequent pairings fall out, make a bracket-analyst job quite the chore.

This Friday night offers home games for five ‘” Big-11″ squads while at least one travels over 100 miles. Saturday has North Cross making the fifty mile trip down Rt. 460 to take on Virginia Episcopal in a rematch of a week-one regular season game. The stakes are bigger this time around.

Four games feature teams with only one loss; five hit the gridiron with 5-5 records. If the Group 3A West falls out perfectly for the “Big-11” in round one, we could have five teams among eight spots in round-two. Got you interested, yet  Here’s a look at the way things fall out in week one.

Group 6A South; Conferences 3 & 4

FOREST PARK (7-3) at PATRICK HENRY (8-2): The boys from Manassas invade Gainer Field for a showdown with the Patriots. The 6A stalwarts are big schools with tons of talent. PH will be looking to make a statement as the number-four seed.

Group 4A North

FAUQUIER (5-5) at SALEM (8-2): No.15 Fauquier looks to advance at Salem Stadium. The Spartans have totally forgotten the early-season losses and should make a serious run.

Group 3A West

CAVE SPRING (5-5) at WESTERN ALBEMARLE (9-1): Has #15 seed Cave Spring totally erased the memory of the 48-0 loss to Hidden Valley last Friday? We’ll find out in a hurry as they need to play a great game against #2 seed WA.

CHRISTIANSBURG (7-3) at WILLIAM BYRD (8-2): This may be the most evenly matched opening round game. Nine seed vs eight seed. The Blue Demons aren’t used to being on the road in round-one.

HIDDEN VALLEY (5-5) at SPOTSWOOD (9-1): Hidden Valley won 4 of their last five games.  Five-seed Spotswood may find its hands full with the 12-seed Titans. May be closer than it appears on paper.

STUARTS DRAFT (7-3) at LORD BOTETOURT (9-1): The Cavalier fans are itching to return to winning ways after Byrd ruined their unbeaten regular season last Friday. It cost LB at couple spots and Stuarts Draft may rue that drop in a hurry.

BROOKVILLE (5-5)  at NORTHSIDE (9-1): Strange to find two-time defending state champ Brookville heading to Viking Stadium as a lowly 14 seed. Northside should still be nervous and prepared for any Bees in November.

Group 2A West

GLENVAR (5-5) at DAN RIVER (8-2): Glenvar has a way of scoring points in bunches. The 14 seed Highlanders may need that against the 3 seed bunch at Dan River.

VIS Championship

NORTH CROSS (8-2) at VIRGINIA EPISCOPAL (8-1) SAT. 1:00 p.m.: The Raiders knocked off previously undefeated Fishburne to get here. North Cross has been looking for this rematch since August. Hard to beat a team twice in a season? Ask VES Saturday around 4 p.m.

Next week we reveal the Wild Bill top-five moments in the 2013 regular season. Want a hint? An unforgettable score, a sash with some cleats, extra credit earns extra points; and, a picture where you’ll shake your head as Loudmouth meets a mule with suspenders on national TV.
