Local Teams Shine in Knights Track Classic Saturday

Twenty-one girls teams and twenty-four boys teams rounded out the exceptional high school track and field competition Saturday in a 10-hour marathon event held at the new outdoor track facility at Cave Spring High School.

In the girls team top-10 results among the Wild Bill ‘Big-11’ schools, Cave Spring finished third, William Fleming fourth, Northside sixth and William Byrd ninth.

On the boys side, William Fleming came in third, Salem sixth, William Byrd eighth, and Patrick Henry ninth.

In individual first-place girls results, Katie Fortner of Cave Spring took the girls 800 and 1,600 meter run, setting a new meet record of 2:15.72 in the 800.

Northside’s 4-girl teams captured the 400-meter relay and 1,600-meter relay. William Byrd took the 4-girl distance medley, while Salem’s Sadie Hooper won in the girls triple jump.

First place finishes in the boys “Big-11′ included Khalil Bonds in the 100-meter dash, Salem’s Kenneth Jordan in the 300-meter hurdles, William Fleming’s Warren Craft in the long jump, Byrd’s Marcellus Fletcher in the triple jump.

 Fleming’s 4-man team captured the 1,600-meter relay.
