New Book On “Notable Women West Of The Blue Ridge” Published

The publication of Notable Women West Of The Blue Ridge, Twentieth Century in November follows the very successful publication in 2007 of Notable Women West of the Blue Ridge 1850 – 1950. Both books are projects of the Colonel William Preston Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and were researched and written by members of the chapter committee, headed by Chairman Rebecca R. Austin.

The biographical sketches are of fifty-four women who made their mark in Southwest Virginia in the fields of fine art, education, music, medicine, religion, community leadership, journalism & writing, philanthropy, theatre & media, culinary arts, government & law, and social services.

Some of the women, all deceased, were public figures such as artist Peyton Klein, journalist Norma Lugar, and television personalities Greta Evans and Betty Bond, but many were influential behind the scenes, like Marion Bradley Via, and make for fascinating reading and discovery as well.

For those interested in women’s history, local & regional history, and black history, this book comes highly recommended. The book is available by contact with Chapter Regent Nancy Canova, 2265 Sewell Lane, Roanoke, 24015, phone 982-5447; and Chairman Rebecca Austin, 2151 Broadway Avenue, Roanoke, 24014, phone 344-2178. Proceeds from book sales benefit projects involving local historic preservation, education, and patriotism. The price of the book is $15.00 plus a $4.00 shipping charge.
