Spectrum Design Wins VSBA Distinguished Design Award for Northside High School

The Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) has awarded Spectrum Design the 2009 Distinguished Design Award in the category of Outstanding Renovation for the firm’s achievement in redesigning Northside High School in Roanoke. The award was presented at the VSBA’s Exhibition of School Architecture at the Annual Convention in Williamsburg.

In May, Spectrum Design completed a $24 million renovation and expansion to the 40-year-old school building that included an 18,500 square-foot addition and the installation of the first geothermal heating and cooling system for a Roanoke school. As part of the new design, the firm added new classrooms and science labs, conference rooms, state-of-the-art career and media centers, a refurbished cafeteria, auditorium, gymnasium and locker rooms, and an outdoor dining courtyard for seniors.

“We are pleased to receive this recognition from the Virginia School Boards Association,” said David Bandy AIA, vice president and Director of Design for Spectrum Design. “The Northside High School renovation is a well thought-through design that rearranges the plan to be more functional, student and staff-friendly, as well as a creative environment to stimulate young minds. Spectrum Design has been given the great privilege of working on more than 200 educational building projects across the state and this award reinforces our position as a leader in innovative design for Virginia schools.”

The project began in 2007 and was completed in three phases to minimize disruptions to students.
